Northern Tier Status

Our registration for the Summer 2012 Northern Tier trip was set-back by the desired July 14, 15, 16, 17, or 18 start dates being already full.  Our options are:

  1. Move the trip to a start date of August 7 or 8.  This would mean, for an 8-day trek, leaving RDU on either August 6, 7, or 8, and returning to RDU no earlier than August 15, and no later than August 17 (depending on the actual starting day, and the flights arranged).
  2. Change the trip destination to the Northern Tier Base at Atikokan, Ontario, Canada.   We haven’t discussed this option, trying to stay with my stated goal of staying in the US at the Ely Base camp.  There are treks available during the July time frame we settled on, but going to Canada would involve obtaining passports, and additional fees for taxes (about $62.00 per person), guide fees (about $136.00)and a longer (about an additional 4 hours added to a 2.5 hour trip) and more costly (add about $120.00 per person)  ground transportation trip.  The Ely Trek is looking like about $1340.00 per person, while the Atikokan Trek is about 1660.00 per person.
  3. Plan and sign-up for a 2013 Trek (hear the groans!...just wanted the elephant in the room acknowledged).

We currently have 1 full trek (6 scouts and 2 adults) plus another scout that expressed interest.  If we were to have 1 to 3 more scouts join the trip, we would be able to send 2 treks (8 to 10 scouts with 6 to 4 adults).

Tomorrow night is our Troop committee meeting.  Please plan on attending, so we can finalize the registration / decision step the this high adventure opportunity.
